The Full Story
A more personal way to eat well.
Meet James
James helps individuals reclaim their health, restore balance, and feel more like themselves again through personalized health and wellness coaching informed by exercise science, behavior change, holistic nutrition, and professional culinary expertise.
Based in the Washington, D.C. area, he is a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach, certified personal trainer, experienced health and fitness leader, and classically trained private chef. His multidisciplinary background allows him to support clients in a way that extends beyond general wellness advice. He helps them understand what may be standing between them and their goals, build practical systems for change, and translate healthy intentions into habits that work in everyday life.
James’ approach is personal, collaborative, and grounded in care. He does not offer rigid plans or one-size-fits-all solutions. Instead, he works alongside each client to explore their priorities, identify barriers, strengthen motivation, and create sustainable strategies around nutrition, movement, stress, energy, routines, and overall well-being.
His culinary background gives him an especially practical perspective on nutrition. Rather than discussing healthy eating only in theory, James understands how food is selected, prepared, seasoned, organized, and enjoyed. He helps clients create a healthier lifestyle without removing the flavor, culture, comfort, and connection that make food meaningful.
Coaching the Whole Person
James believes meaningful wellness begins with understanding the whole person.
A client’s health is influenced by more than what they eat or how often they exercise. Work demands, family responsibilities, stress, sleep, confidence, environment, access to food, past experiences, and daily routines can all affect the ability to make consistent choices.
For that reason, James begins by listening.
He takes time to understand where each client is today, what they would like to change, what has worked before, and what continues to get in the way. Together, they identify realistic opportunities for progress and develop a plan that reflects the client’s life—not an idealized version of it.
His coaching may address areas such as:
- Wellness vision and goal development
- Lifestyle and behavior change
- Nutrition habits and meal structure
- Physical activity and exercise readiness
- Stress management and recovery
- Sleep and energy routines
- Accountability and motivation
- Grocery shopping and food-environment strategies
- Pantry and kitchen organization
- Cooking confidence and practical meal preparation
- Healthy routines for individuals and families
The goal is not perfection. It is to create a healthier rhythm that feels realistic, supportive, and sustainable.
Guidance, Not Judgment
James’ coaching philosophy is based on guidance rather than prescription.
He does not believe clients need to be criticized, lectured, or made to feel ashamed of where they are. Most people already know that they could eat differently, move more, sleep longer, or manage stress more effectively. The challenge is rarely a complete lack of knowledge. The challenge is turning that knowledge into consistent action while managing the realities of daily life.
James helps clients examine those realities with honesty and without judgment.
Through thoughtful conversation, reflective listening, and collaborative goal-setting, he helps clients identify their own motivations and develop solutions they feel prepared to carry forward. His role is not to take control of the client’s life. It is to help the client build confidence, clarity, and ownership over the changes they choose to make.
He does not promote temporary diets or short-term cycles of restriction. He focuses on lifestyle change—patterns, systems, and decisions that can be practiced over time.
For James, discipline is not punishment. It is an exercise in mindfulness. It involves planning, awareness, preparation, and continuing to show up for yourself in small, meaningful ways.
A Personal Understanding of Change
James’ approach to coaching is shaped not only by education and professional experience, but also by his own health journey.
A lifelong athlete, he grew up understanding the connection between physical activity, discipline, and performance. Fitness was a central part of his identity, and his interest in exercise science, sports nutrition, and human performance eventually led him to pursue advanced education in physical education and exercise science, earn certification as a personal trainer, and become a National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach.
Despite that knowledge, there was a period in his life when his own nutrition, activity, and daily routines fell out of alignment.
His weight climbed to 260 pounds. His blood pressure and cholesterol became serious concerns, and medication became part of the conversation. Like many people, he understood what he was “supposed” to do. But understanding the information was not the same as having the structure, support, and consistent habits needed to follow through.
He eventually made the decision to rebuild his health with intention. He changed the way he ate, increased his physical activity, created more supportive daily systems, and lost 80 pounds.
More importantly, he regained his confidence, improved his sense of control, and reconnected with the person he knew he could be.
That experience transformed the way he supports others.
James understands the frustration of feeling disconnected from your health. He understands the embarrassment, fear, discouragement, and self-doubt that can develop when your body, habits, or energy no longer feel familiar. He also understands that lasting change rarely happens through shame.
It happens through support, self-awareness, realistic planning, and the belief that progress is still possible.
Wellness Informed by Culinary Expertise
James’ culinary background is not separate from his wellness work. It is one of the qualities that makes his approach especially practical.
As a classically trained chef, he understands food from both a nutritional and experiential perspective. He knows that meals are not simply combinations of calories, nutrients, or ingredients. Food is also culture, memory, pleasure, family, comfort, routine, and identity.
This understanding allows him to help clients approach nutrition without making food feel clinical or joyless.
James can help clients explore how their meals support their wellness goals while also considering the flavors they enjoy, the foods they grew up with, the amount of time they have available, their comfort in the kitchen, and the needs of the people with whom they share meals.
Depending on the client, that support may include:
- Creating more balanced meal routines
- Identifying practical ways to increase nutrient-dense foods
- Reducing reliance on highly processed convenience meals
- Building lower-sodium cooking habits
- Exploring lower-fat preparation techniques
- Improving portion awareness
- Planning meals around physical activity and energy needs
- Developing grocery-shopping strategies
- Learning how to season healthy food effectively
- Building confidence with simple cooking techniques
- Organizing the kitchen to make healthier choices easier
James does not believe healthy eating should feel restrictive, generic, or uninspired. He believes meals can support a person’s health while remaining colorful, satisfying, culturally meaningful, and enjoyable.
Food Has Always Meant More Than Food
James’ relationship with food began long before his professional culinary training.
Some of his earliest memories are of being in the kitchen with his grandmother, helping her prepare simple meals that communicated warmth and care. He remembers returning home from school and sports practice to the familiar comfort of his mother’s cooking—Mexican rice, beans, fresh tortillas, and meals that brought the family together at the end of the day.
Weekends often centered around cookouts and family gatherings, where food became the force that drew everyone into the same space.
Long before becoming a chef or wellness coach, James understood that a meal could do more than satisfy hunger. It could create belonging, restore energy, preserve culture, and remind someone of who they are and where they come from.
Those early experiences continue to shape his work today.
When James speaks with clients about food, he does not begin by dividing everything into “good” and “bad.” He considers the emotional and cultural role food plays in their lives. He helps clients preserve what matters while finding thoughtful ways to support their current health goals.
A Global Culinary Perspective
James’ culinary identity is deeply connected to Mexican cuisine, particularly the regional flavors of Southern California and Baja California. The food cultures of San Diego, Tijuana, Rosarito Beach, Ensenada, Puerto Nuevo, and the surrounding region shaped his appreciation for fresh ingredients, vibrant produce, seafood, bold flavors, color, and simplicity presented with care.
After joining the military and moving overseas, food became an even stronger connection to home. Living abroad made him miss the flavors he grew up with, but it also introduced him to the many ways food connects people across cultures.
A soup experienced in France could carry the same comfort as something prepared by his mother. A technique used in a European kitchen could resemble a method found in traditional Mexican cooking. Across different countries, he began to recognize shared ideas expressed through different ingredients, histories, and traditions.
Through years of living and traveling across Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, James developed a culinary perspective that is global, curious, and deeply personal. His cooking draws inspiration from Mexican, Hawaiian Pacific, Japanese, Chinese, Mediterranean, and coastal traditions, with an emphasis on fresh seafood, colorful vegetables, balanced flavors, and quality ingredients.
Culinary school gave him the formal structure to refine that creativity. Classical training strengthened his technique, precision, organization, and ability to manage the complexity of a professional kitchen. It did not replace his cultural foundation. It gave him the tools to elevate and expand it.
Today, that culinary knowledge strengthens his wellness coaching by helping clients bridge the gap between knowing what healthier eating looks like and understanding how to make it practical, flavorful, and sustainable.
From Information to Everyday Action
Many wellness programs provide information. James helps clients determine how to use that information in their own lives.
A recommendation may sound simple on paper—cook more meals at home, eat more vegetables, reduce sodium, become more active, or improve sleep—but carrying it out may require several supporting changes.
Does the client know what to buy?
Do they have the right foods available when they become hungry?
Do they feel comfortable preparing them?
Does their schedule allow enough time?
Are family members willing to eat the same meals?
Is stress leading to impulsive choices?
Are their goals realistic for their current level of readiness?
James helps clients examine these details because they are often where lasting change succeeds or breaks down.
Together, they may redesign a grocery routine, simplify meal decisions, create a more supportive kitchen environment, establish realistic activity goals, develop a plan for demanding workdays, or identify small steps that rebuild confidence.
The objective is to make healthy choices more accessible—not by relying on constant willpower, but by building an environment and routine that better support them.
Supporting Clients Through Life Transitions
James works especially well with individuals who feel they have lost the rhythm that once supported their health.
Some are former or current athletes who remember feeling strong, active, and confident but no longer recognize their current routines. Some are busy professionals who have placed their own health behind the demands of work. Others are parents, caregivers, leaders, or frequent travelers trying to care for themselves while meeting responsibilities that never seem to slow down.
Many clients are not lacking ambition. They are overwhelmed.
They may have tried restrictive diets, intense fitness plans, or wellness programs that worked briefly but did not fit their long-term lives. They may feel frustrated that they continue to start over, or embarrassed that they have not been able to make changes on their own.
James helps bring structure to that overwhelm.
He supports clients in separating what is urgent from what is truly important, identifying changes that offer the greatest value, and creating a sequence of manageable steps. Over time, those steps can become routines, and those routines can become a healthier way of living.
A More Personal Approach to Nutrition
James’ private-chef experience gives him insight into how individual nutrition needs can vary from person to person.
Every client brings different preferences, routines, family dynamics, cultural traditions, cooking abilities, and wellness priorities. For one person, eating well may mean developing lower-sodium habits to support blood pressure goals. For another, it may involve choosing cooking methods and ingredients that support cholesterol management. Another client may be focused on weight management, physical performance, improved energy, family meals, or reducing dependence on restaurant food.
James helps clients develop strategies that account for those differences.
He may work with clients on personalized meal ideas, cooking methods, menu structure, grocery planning, ingredient selection, portion awareness, or ways to make familiar meals more supportive of their goals.
When chef services are included, meals are thoughtfully designed around the client’s preferences, lifestyle, and stated wellness priorities. James emphasizes freshness, quality, flavor, and individualized preparation rather than standardized menus or bulk production.
The result is a highly personalized connection between coaching and daily life. Clients are not simply told what healthier eating might look like. They are supported in making it tangible.
More Than Meal Preparation
James’ work extends well beyond preparing food.
As a health and wellness coach with professional culinary expertise, he can support clients through a combination of coaching, education, accountability, and practical lifestyle guidance.
This may include:
- Establishing a personal wellness vision
- Setting meaningful and realistic goals
- Developing weekly action steps
- Identifying behavioral and environmental barriers
- Strengthening confidence and motivation
- Creating meal and grocery strategies
- Improving cooking skills
- Developing family wellness routines
- Reorganizing the pantry or kitchen environment
- Building more consistent movement habits
- Preparing for challenging situations, travel, or demanding work periods
- Reviewing progress and adjusting strategies when life changes
When appropriate, chef-prepared meals or culinary instruction may complement the coaching relationship. However, the broader purpose remains the same: helping the client build a lifestyle that supports greater health, confidence, and well-being.
